2007: (Partial List)
Hoke County, North Carolina: Mill Prong House Burying Ground
Mill Prong House is the oldest Scottish settlement in the entire region, dating from 1795. The burial ground served the plantation and area from the early 1800's through the early 1900's. The preservation project included the conservation of numerous historic gravestones and Victorian monuments primarily compose of marble. The graveyard was transformed from being in a highly neglected state to a cared for outdoor museum.
Tarrytown New York, Old Dutch Burying Ground at Sleep Hollow Cemetery
Conservation of fractured and fallen marble tablet gravestones. Consolidation of marble with Conservare HCT stone strengthener. Also included in this project was the consolidation of many highly eroded historic brownstone gravestones with Conservare OH stone Strengthener, Jahn's Restoration Mortar and D2 Stone biocide and cleaner.
Hartford, Connecticut: The Ancient Burial Ground
Conservation of about a dozen badly leaning and or sunken gravestones composed of brownstone, marble and slate was performed in late 2006. Complete conservation of a very hazardous marble obelisk monument on a pedestal base in the front of Hartford's oldest burying ground. Excavate and jack up entire monument until level. Install concrete footings to under lower base. Clean monument with D2 stone cleaner and biocide. Remove all lose mortar, and replace with historic pointing mortar.
Eastham, Massachusetts: Cape Cod: Bridge Road Burying Ground
Conservation of nearly 40 historic memorials primarily composed of 18 th and 19 th century slate tablet gravestones. Conservation procedures include treatments to fallen, fractured, and leaning and sunken gravestones. Also conserved were 7 brownstone tablet stones including consolidation with Conservare OH stone consolidant and strengthener. Additionally a smaller number of marble gravestones received conservation treatments.
Bland, Missouri: Historic Cryder Cemetery
Preservation of an entire large family graveyard including gravestones and monuments from the early 1800's through the mid 1900's. This project included the re-setting and conservation of primarily marble tablet stones, in addition to marble and granite monuments. Located down a long dirt road leading to a farm, I was almost prevented from completing this project due to quickly rising water runoff which became a small river in the roadway over night. Luckily two local high school boys with a very tall truck were able to provide much needed assistance.
Windsor, Connecticut: Palisado Cemetery
The oldest cemetery in Windsor, which contains some of the oldest gravestones in Connecticut. This conservation project included over 30 gravestones and monuments composed of marble, brownstone, and granite. Existing conditions ranged from broken and fallen, to very badly leaning gravestones.
2006:
Cheyenne, Wyoming : Lakeview Cemetery
Gravestone conservation workshop.
Reconstruction of two large fallen and fractured marble obelisks, Including the obelisk memorializing a Pony Express rider, which is listed as a local historic landmark.
The Old First Presbyterian Church Cemetery : Greensboro, North Carolina
Gravestone Conservation training and preservation project.
One week long combination of training, consulting and conserving the gravestones and monuments found on the historic site in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.
Holy Ridge, North Carolina :
Documentation and conservation of an entire small rural graveyard, which was accidentally located when a bulldozer involved in developing the area, crashed into one of the obscured marble tombstones in the woods.
Reading Family Burying Ground: Stockton, New Jersey
Documentation and conservation of an entire rural graveyard found adjacent to a horse farm in southern NJ.
Chestnut Hill Cemetery : Exeter, Rhode Island
Conservation of various historic gravestones and monuments composed of primarily marble and granite. Stabilization of the famous “Mercy Brown Vampire” monument.
Brookfield Cemetery : Brookfield, Massachusetts
Photographic documentation, Temporary Stabilization, and preservation recommendations of the historic granite entranceway which included working at the top of the 20 foot tall structure.
Bunker Hill Cemetery : Boston, Massachusetts
Reconstruction of fallen and fractured granite obelisk. Stabilization of tall marble obelisk.
Village Cemetery : Newtown, Connecticut
First of two phases of gravestone and monument conservation project. Also the first phase of the Hawley Memorial Chapel preservation project.
Enfield Street Cemetery : Enfield, Connecticut
Conservation of assorted gravestones and monuments composed primarily of brownstone and marble as part of an ongoing gravestone preservation effort.
